The great auk was a large flightless seabird that lived across the North Atlantic Ocean until the mid 19th Century. Armed with a distinctive hooked beak, it used its powerful wings to glide rapidly underwater while hunting fish. Sadly, heavy hunting by sailors eventually drove this remarkable bird to extinction.
