Iguanodon was one of the first dinosaurs ever discovered. Fossils found by Mary Ann Mantell in 1822 were then described by her husband Gideon Mantell, a pioneering palaeontologist, in 1825. It was a hefty herbivore with large thumb spikes, which it likely used for defence and to help break open fruit.
